I think I understand what Reid is doing here. He knows Frist will never compromise. Frist is stuck on engaging the "nuclear option" because he is in the pocket of the extremists on the right and has Presidential ambitions for '08. If he pisses off the religious right, who wants the nuclear option (to pave the way to a Supreme Court packed with extremist conservatives), then he'll be killing his '08 Presidential chances - he needs the fundies.

Reid knows Frist probably won't compromise because of this so, he gets to make Frist and the Republicans look like the non-partisan jackasses. If Frist DOES compromise, while Owens is pretty horrible, it still saves us the filibuster for the REALLLLLY important thing - the Supreme Court nominees sure to come up in the next few years.

Just my humble opinion...

No, I understand compromising. Not sure I'd go 5-2, but still. What I DON'T understand is specifically allowing Owens! Frist in '08 scares me to death. :( And the SCOTUS by then scares me.
